# Profile of Cheranda Community in the Kintampo Municipal “B” Assembly, Bono East Region, Ghana ## Acknowledgment The research team extends its sincere gratitude to numerous individuals and institutions who supported the study conducted in the Cheranda community. This report acknowledges the collaborative efforts that were instrumental in facilitating the research. ## Executive Summary The study, spanning seven weeks, was aimed at developing practical skills in community studies among students. The report highlights key demographic characteristics, economic activities, and pressing issues faced by the Cheranda community, including a scarcity of potable water and inadequate health facilities. The findings stress the necessity for governmental and NGO interventions to enhance the living conditions in the community. ## Introduction The report introduces the Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP) organized by the University for Development Studies. This initiative integrates academic learning with community engagement, focusing on fostering students' positive attitudes toward rural work while exposing them to real-world development challenges. The report aims to equip students with the necessary skills and attitudes for contributing effectively to rural and underserved communities. ## Research Methodology The research employed a mix of methodologies, including personal interviews, focus group discussions, transect walks, secondary data collection, and reconnaissance surveys. These approaches were designed to gather a comprehensive understanding of the community across various dimensions. ### Research Limitations The researchers encountered several limitations, including a lack of knowledge among respondents about personal information, adverse weather conditions, confusion regarding the group’s mission, and financial constraints affecting the research process. --- ## CHAPTER ONE: Location Cheranda is located in the Kintampo Municipal Assembly and is characterized by undulating terrain and poor drainage systems. ### Climate The community has a rainy season from March to October and a dry season from November to March, creating ideal conditions for the cultivation of crops such as yam and maize. ### Vegetation and Soil Rich vegetation supports agricultural activities, but human activities such as charcoal burning pose significant threats to the ecosystem. #### Weaknesses The report does not sufficiently analyze the impact of environmental challenges, particularly charcoal burning, on the community’s sustainability and health. --- ## CHAPTER TWO: Population ### Population Size The Cheranda community has a total population of 429, with a slight male majority. ### Age Structure The population pyramid displays a youthful demographic, indicating a robust labor force. ### Economic Dependency Ratios An age dependency ratio of approximately 1:1 suggests a balanced ratio of dependents to working adults. #### Weaknesses The population data lacks contextual analysis regarding its implications for community development. Insights into migration trends and their effects on labor and socio-economic dynamics could enhance understanding. --- ## CHAPTER THREE: Social Development This chapter investigates the social fabric of the Cheranda community, focusing on religious affiliations, kinship structures, and educational status. It reveals community values, norms, and social challenges, while highlighting the inadequacies in educational materials and school infrastructure. #### Weaknesses The report does not offer specific recommendations to tackle educational, health, housing, water, and sanitation challenges facing the community. --- ## CHAPTER FOUR: Economic Development The economic activities of the Cheranda community heavily lean toward agriculture. This chapter details employment status, occupational distribution, and agricultural production, revealing the community's reliance on farming while addressing economic challenges like unemployment rates. #### Weaknesses Further analysis of income distribution and poverty levels is necessary. Additionally, the potential for industrial activities and commerce to foster economic growth remains unaddressed. --- ## CHAPTER FIVE: Historical and Local Governance This chapter provides historical context and outlines governance structures in Cheranda, discussing both traditional and modern political systems. Understanding these frameworks is key for recognizing decision-making processes and community project initiation. ### Weaknesses The report falls short of capturing the full dynamics of leadership and governance influence on addressing community development challenges. --- Overall, while the report provides valuable insights into the Cheranda community, several areas could benefit from deeper analysis and specific recommendations to better address the needs and challenges identified.
